Domestic Gourmet Organic Annatto Oil, 12 fl oz bottle

Annatto oil questions, answered

Are annatto oil and achiote oil the same thing?

Yes. Annatto oil, achiote oil and aceite de achiote are names for oil infused with annatto seeds. It adds golden-red color and a mild, earthy flavor. Our bottled oil is already infused and ready to use.

What does it taste like—is it spicy?

Annatto oil has a mild, earthy, subtly nutty flavor. It adds color without chili heat, so you can season the rest of the dish to your taste.

How do I use annatto oil, and how much do I need?

Use it as the cooking oil in rice, beans, sofrito and stews, or where your pasteles recipe calls for aceite de achiote. Follow the oil quantity in your recipe rather than adding extra oil on top.

For a concrete starting point, Chef Ciji’s sofrito recipe uses ¼ cup (4 tablespoons) per batch. A 12 fl oz bottle contains 24 tablespoons—enough for six batches at that quantity.

What ingredients are in your oil?

Two organic ingredients: high-oleic sunflower oil and annatto seeds. The color comes from the annatto seeds. There are no added artificial colors.

How long does it last after opening, and how should I store it?

Follow the best-by date and storage instructions on your bottle. Keep the cap closed between uses. For guidance about an opened bottle or a particular batch, ask us below and include the date or lot information on the label.

When will my order arrive? Is shipping free?

Our published shipping policy estimates standard transit at 3–7 business days within the US and 6–10 business days to Puerto Rico, after processing. Tracking is sent when your order ships.

Is your annatto oil vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free?

Yes. Our annatto oil is made from organic high-oleic sunflower oil and organic annatto seeds and is vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free. Check the bottle’s ingredient information when choosing foods for your dietary needs.

What should I know about its nutrition?

Our base is organic high-oleic sunflower oil infused with organic annatto seeds. Refer to the bottle’s Nutrition Facts for serving sizes and nutrient amounts. We recommend choosing it for its cooking versatility, color and flavor.

Does annatto oil stain cookware or clothing?

Its natural pigment may stain light fabrics or porous materials. Pour carefully and clean spills promptly.

Why choose Domestic Gourmet’s ready-to-use oil?

You get a two-ingredient organic oil without having to infuse, cool and strain annatto seeds yourself. Keep a bottle ready for a batch of sofrito, a pot of rice or a family pasteles day.

Does the Adobo & Sazón Duo include annatto oil?

No. The duo contains one 5 oz Organic Adobo and one 2 oz Organic Sazón. The 12 fl oz annatto oil is sold separately. Use the oil for cooking and color, and the seasonings to build flavor to taste.
